Daspletosaurus torosus (Carr, 1999)

Daspletosaurus torosus

was originally named by Russell (1970a). Although it is known from the Oldman Formation (contra Holtz 2001b), other specimens from the Dinosaur Park Formation of Alberta (Currie 2003a, 2003b) and the Two Medicine Formation of Montana (Horner et al. 1992; Holtz 2001b) may represent the same species or one or more closely related ones. Other material sharing the convex tablike process on the dorsolateral surface of the postorbital is known from the Kirtland Formation of New Mexico (Lehman and Carpenter 1990; Carr and Williamson 2000; Holtz 2001b). Lehman and Carpenter (1990) and Holtz (2001b) considered this material as representing a taxon closely related to “ Aublysodon mirandus ” (now a nomen dubium), although they observed the Daspletosaurus configuration of the postorbital. Carr and Williamson (2000) assigned it to Daspletosaurus sp. and gave a preliminary description of a possible new species based on a subadult individual. Daspletosaurus is diagnosed by a convex tablike process on the dorsolateral surface of the postorbital.
