Host/habitat. Phenacoccus gossypii, Phenacoccus sp., Planococcus citri, P. maritimus, P. neomaritimus

Remarks. This species was originally reported from the USA by Kerrich’s (1967) reference to specimens from “California, Fillmore”. However, these were laboratory reared from the insectary of the Fillmore Protection District, and it is unknown if they had been collected locally or imported. This species is known to occur from Peru north to at least Mexico (Noyes 2015), and specimens referrable to lamasi (CAS, EMEC, SBMN, UCRC) have been widely collected in southern California, so it appears likely that the species occurs here naturally. Noyes & Hayat (1994) reported Pseudococcus elisae Borchensius as a host, citing De Santis (1983), but in fact the latter paper does not link these two species.

Remarks. Kerrich (1967) reported a specimen of this species reared from “ Heterococcus pulverarius (Newstead) ”, which is now placed in the genus Brevennia . However, Miller (1975) noted that some mealybugs identified as H. pulverarius were actually H. nudus (Green), so the exact host still needs to be confirmed. Except for the California records reported in Kerrich (1967), this species appears to be restricted to the western Palaearctic, so I’m treating this species as an accidental introduction into the state.

Remarks. Specimens that appear to represent two undescribed species (both with macropterous and brachypterous forms) have been collected from Alameda, Contra Costa, Lassen, Los Angeles, Modoc, Napa, Riverside, San Bernardino, Shasta, Sierra, Solano, Stanislaus and Tuolumne counties (CAS, EMEC, RLZC, SBMN, UCFC, UCRC).
