Diagnostic features: Tarsal claws similar on all three pairs of legs, twisted asymmetrically, overhung by heavy, black hair; tibial spur formula 2, 4, 4. Male sternite V paired lobes each with aperture from large internal gland of two cavities, lobe more or less developed depending on species, gland small, spherical, in female with lobe only slightly developed. Forewing cross-veins m-cu and cu clearly separated. Hind wing fork I petiolate; median cell closed; stems of M and Cu1 parallel and very close together (Figs. 62, 63).

Male genitalia: Segment IX having posterolateral margins projecting posterad, with long setae. Segment X simple or complex, massive, with lobes shaped differently among species. Inferior appendages each 2-segmented, with stout, conical apical segment. Phallus curved ventrad basally, bilobed distally in some species, simple or complex. Female genitalia: Tergite VIII notched in middle of apex, occasionally with slightly curved apicolateral angles. Sternite VIII divided into 2 large lobes over half its length. Segment X forming blunt, seta-bearing angle on each side; cavity or depression with species-specific shape located in middle of each side for insertion of tip of inferior appendage of male during mating; apex with two pairs of digitate processes and pair of cerci.
