DISTRIBUTION: SE British Columbia and W Alberta (Canada) to NE Oregon, C Idaho, and C Montana (USA).

SYNONYMS: albertae (J. Allen, 1903); brachiura (Rafinesque, 1817); erythrogluteia (Richardson, 1829); ruficaudus (A. Howell, 1928) .

COMMENTS: Subgenus Urocitellus according to Gromov et al. (1965:196), but Hall (1981:381) included Urocitellus in subgenus Spermophilus . Chromosomes described by Nadler et al. (1975a). Reviewed by Elliot and Flinders (1991, Mammalian Species, 372).
