A checklist of and a key to known and valid species of Cryptalaus Ôhira in India

Platia & Pulvirenti (2021: 180) recorded Calais afghanicus Chassain, 1991 from India (Almora, Uttarakhand) as Cryptalaus afghanicus without any remarks. We follow Hoffmannova et al. (2023: 291) in not considering this species in Cryptalaus . Additionally, Chalcolepis kashyapi Vats & Kashyap, 1992 is an erroneous assignment and requires detailed study to determine its generic status. The male genitalia described (Vats & Kashyap 1992: 197; Fig. 2) is not like that of Cryptalaus and the abdominal ventrite V is said to have two deep foveae (Vats & Kashyap 1992: 196). Thus, we agree with Cate (2007: 208) and keep this species under species incertae sedis.

Therefore, at present the Indian fauna of the genus Cryptalaus Ôhira is represented by 14 species. The species are listed below:

2. Cryptalaus assamensis (Schwarz, 1902) .

India: Assam.

3. Cryptalaus cardoni (Candèze, 1890) comb. nov.

India: Jharkhand, Maharashtra.

4. Cryptalaus emarginatus (Punam, Vats & Saini, 1996) comb. nov.

India: Assam.

5. Cryptalaus eryx (Candèze, 1874) .

India: Assam, West Bengal.

6. Cryptalaus furunculus (Sarkar, Saha & Raychaudhuri, 2016) comb. nov.

India: West Bengal.

7. Cryptalaus lynceus (Candèze, 1874) .

North India (precise location unknown).

8. Cryptalaus nigrimaculatus (Punam, Vats & Saini, 1996) comb. nov.

India: Assam.

9. Cryptalaus nodulosus (Waterhouse, 1877) .

India: Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

10. Cryptalaus rotundoextremus (Vats & Kashyap, 1992) comb. nov.

India: Uttarakhand.

11. Cryptalaus sculptus (Westwood, 1848) .

India: Meghalaya, Nagaland.

12. Cryptalaus sordidus (Westwood, 1848) .
