Subgenus: Elachista; freyerella species group.
Distribution: Australasian. Australia (Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Norfolk Island, South Australia, Tasmania, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia), New Zealand. Neotropical. Chile (adventive).
Larval host plant(s): Bromus catharticus M. Vahl, Holcus mollis L., Echinopogon sp. ( Poaceae) Kaila (2011a).

Remarks: Bradley (1956: 152) and Dugdale (1988: 111) considered E. synethes a synonym of E. archaeonoma Meyrick, 1888 . Examination of the type material of these species (L. Kaila, personal observation) shows that they are distinct, E. archaeonoma belonging to the E. freyerella subgroup of the E. freyerella group, E. synethes to the E. synethes subgroup of the E. freyerella group, according to the classification of Kaila (2011a).
