Remarks. This species was originally described in the iriartei group from Panama by Wirth & Blanton (1959). Posteriorly, Wirth (1974) included it in the subgenus Diphaomyia Vargas. Five very similar species belonging to this subgenus inhabits in Mexico: Culicoides baueri Hoffman, C. blantoni Vargas & Wirth, C. haematopotus Malloch, C. iriartei Fox and C. tzotzil sp. nov. Culicoides evansi can be distinguished by the characteristics included in the key.
