Material examined. New Caledonia. Baie des Citrons, Noumea, 3 m coll. Th. Monod #4150, 1976, 1 male (MNHN-NA 8205), (misidentified as S. tenuirostris). — Loyalty Islands. Ouvea, Ilot Bagat, 9–11m, coll. J. P. Menou, 18.XI.1991, 1 female (MNHN –Na).

Measurements (mm). Male, PCL: 6.6; RCL: 10.0; TL: 24.6.—Female, PCL: 7.2; RCL: 11.7; TL: 29.4.

Distribution. The species has been collected from Broadhurst Reef, Queensland, Australia; Pulau Ubi and Pulau Dapur, Java, Indonesia; and off Kilifi, Kenya (FSM 18325). It has been photographed off Singapore and the Philippines. The present records from New Caledonia add to the species’ fairly wide distribution and further sampling of shallow tropical Indo-West Pacific reefal habitats will probably provide a more continuous distribution for the species.

Coloration. The color description for this species was presented by Goy (1992). A photograph was taken of the specimen from the Loyalty Islands that agrees with the type material, except that the red stripe on the scaphocerite is broader and the propodi of the last two pairs of the pereiopods were reddish.

Remarks. Examination of Monod’s (1976) specimen, which he identified as Stenopus tenuirostris from Baie des Citrons, Noumea confirmed the synonymy with S. cyanoscelis (Goy, 1992) . Chan & Mitsuhashi (2007), Junker & Poupin (2009) and Poupin & Junker (2010) followed Monod's (1976) record of S. tenuirostris from New Caledonia, which again has been shown to be S. cyanoscelis . The other specimen of S. cyanoscelis was taken in the Loyalty Islands between 9– 11 m. Both specimens agree well with the type material (Goy 1992).
