Taxonomic history. Raised to generic status by Ashmead, 1899: 54. Reduced to subgeneric status (in Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758) by André, 1901a: 176. Reinstated to generic status by André, 1902c: 24. Senior subjective synonym of Rudia Costa, 1858 . Valid generic name.

Sex association. The male of the type species was associated and identified (as Mutilla incompleta Lepeletier, 1845: 609) by Wesmael, 1851: 373.
