Gender. Masculine (Article 30.2.4 of the Code).

Type species. Mutilla rufipes Fabricius, 1787 (female), by monotypy (attributed to Latreille, 1792).

Taxonomic history. Reduced to subgeneric status (in Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758) by Dalla Torre, 1897: 5. Junior subjective synonym of Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 according to André, 1902c: 32. Resurrected to generic status by Ashmead, 1903: 326. Valid generic name.

Sex association. The male of the type species was associated although misidentified (as Mutilla ephippium Fabricius, 1793) by Spinola, 1806: 156 (the first published association, by Latreille, 1792: 9, was apparently incorrect) and repeatedly been described although misidentified; Petersen, 1988: 160, 186, 188, 189 has clarified this.
