Melanostomias valdiviae Brauer, 1902 .

To 23.2 cm (9.1 in) SL (Gibbs in Quéro et al. 1990). Circumglobal; western Pacific Ocean north to Japan (Fujii in Masuda et al. 1984); San Juan Seamount, southern California and well-off Point Conception, California (Berry and Perkins 1966), and Isla Guadalupe, central Baja California (Personal communication: Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History Fish Collection, Los Angeles, California). Mesopelagic; depth: 0–1,460 m (4,789 ft) (Roberts et al. 2015). A record of 3,274 m (10,740 ft) (Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California) was based on the maximum depth fished by a midwater trawl and may represent a catch shallower than the maximum depth.
