Scotophilus leucogaster (Cretzschmar, 1826) . In Ruppell, Atlas Reise Nordl. Afr., Saugeth., P- 71.
TYPE LOCALITY: Sudan, Kordofan Region, Brunnen Nedger (Nedger Well) .
DISTRIBUTION: Mauritania and Senegal to N. Kenya and Ethiopia; south to South Africa.
COMMENT: Includes damarensis. For scope of this species see Koopman, 1975, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 154:414-416 (as nigrita) and Koopman et al., 1978, Am. Mus. Novit., 2643:4-5. However, Robbins, 1978, J. Mammal., 59:212-213, has shown that the name nigrita was misapplied to another species, for which the next available name was dinganii, and which would be included in leucogaster if Koopman's (1975) reasoning were followed. However, Schlitter et al., 1980, Ann. Transvaal Mus., 32:231-239, listed dinganii as distinct from leucogaster, as does CBR. Also see comment under borbonicus .
