DISTRIBUTION: Honduras to Uruguay and E. Brazil; Trinidad.

COMMENT: Originally described as a subspecies of simus; M. guaycuru may be the oldest name for this species; see LaVal, 1973, Bull. Los Ang. Cty. Mus. Nat. Hist. Sci. Soc., 15:32-35.
