Occurrence: worldwide (WPC 2023).

Known localities in Hungary: Budapest, Tapolca (Tömösváry 1882a). Simontornya (Pillich 1914). Vádé (Daday 1918). Vál (Kárpáthegyi 2007). Püspökhatvan (Novák 2013a). Zirc (Novák 2015). Szin: Szelcepuszta (Novák 2018).

Habitat preference: this species has been found mostly in dry habitats, often in anthropogenic situations (Beier 1963a; Legg & Jones 1988). In Slovakia, it has been reported from beech and fir flowery forest with the presence of maple, from floodplain alder forest with beech and grey alder (Jászayová & Jászay 2022), and from bird nests (Christophoryová et al. 2011d). Cheiridium museorum has been reported from a wide variety of synanthropic habitats in Hungary (Tӧmӧsváry 1883; Pillich 1914; Kárpáthegyi 2007; Novák 2013 a, 2015, 2018).

Remarks: Cheiridium museorum was firstly recorded from Hungary by Tömösváry (1882a) in the late 19th century. Its occurrence in the country was summarized by Christophoryová & Červená (2020).
