Habitat preference: According to Červená et al. (2021b), Chernes hahnii is strictly associated with tree microhabitats. It prefers open areas, where it can be found under tree bark, but sometimes in forests (Beier 1963a). In Slovakia it was found in bird nest (Christophoryová et al. 2011d; Christophoryová et al. 2017b) and in heaps of decomposing material (Kaňuchová et al. 2015), from compost heaps (Christophoryová et al. 2017a), from ant nests (Christophoryová et al. 2017b), in dead wood and in tree hollow, and under tree bark (Christophoryová et al. 2017c), and it was also collected by sifting of organic material, and sifting of rotten hay garden waste and compost (Krajčovičová et al. 2012). In Hungary, it has been reported from the debris of a horse stable (Novák 2018). During the present study it was found in the following habitats: softwood groves, willow swamps, plant debris from a garden, from plane trees, under poplar wood, willow-poplar groves, under bark of plane trees and oak trees, oak forests on loess, and from barns.

Remarks: Chernes hahnii was first reported from Hungary by Mahnert (1983). Since then, it has been found in numerous new localities.
