Simulium monticola Friederichs

NOTE 1: The true identity of the chromocentric species whose complement is shown in fig. 3 of Chubareva & Ralcheva (1974), fig. 2 of Knoz & Chubareva (1974), and fig. 195 of Chubareva & Petrova (2008a) is unknown. Simulium monticola is not chromocentric, nor is any other studied member of the S. variegatum group.

NOTE 2: The chromosomal banding pattern figured by Chubareva & Yankovsky (1992; original species description of S. laplandicum) and Chubareva & Petrova (2008a, fig. 192) is identical with that of S. monticola (Adler, unpublished); formal synonymy of laplandicum with monticola will be proposed elsewhere.
