Type Material. Holotype, m: BR, SP, Campos do Jordão, PECJ, Ribeirão Casquilho (22°39’49”S, 45°25’04”W), 26/XI/1986, CGF. Paratypes: PECJ, Córrego Galharada (22°41’29”S, 45°27’58”W), 4 m, 11/ XI/1985, CGF, LGO; 1 m, 30/X/1986, CGF; 2 m, 1 f, 25/XI/1986; 2 m, 21/X/1987, CGF, JA Cangussu, IC Boleli; 6 m, 1 f, 17–20/XI/1987, CGF, LGO, MJNF, GMC; 4 m, 3/XI/2005, MRS.

Description. General colour ochraceous to brownish ochraceous. Head (Fig. 7) mostly ochraceous but genae and sides of parietalia more brownish; lappets brown. Palpi ochraceous to light brown, scape ochraceous to brownish, pedicel and flagellum brown. Pronotum brownish ochraceous, sides more brownish. Legs brown, bases of femora lighter. Wing membrane and most veins light ochraceous, C brownish basally, distally pale; Sc and R-RA pale. Cerci brown, distal segments inconspicuously ringed in shades of light brown.

Male. Forewing length, 20.0–23.0 mm (n=16). Hammer a very low truncate cone (Fig. 8). In penial armature (Figs. 11–13), lateral more sclerotized parts (shoulders) extend ventrally to hooks, forming lobes rich in sensillae. Ventral vesicles and dorsal keel absent. Hooks relatively short, pointed. A pair of protuberances present basal to hook bases.

Female. Forewing length, 23.4 and 25.2 mm, n=2. Subgenital plate 4-lobed (Fig. 9), lobes short, median notch wide and shallow. Apex of St9 shallowly concave, most of sternum clothed with short hairs, lateral hairs thicker than the medial ones.

Egg (Fig. 10). Oval, 0.29–0.30 x 0.55–0.58 mm (n=4). Collar button-like, no stalk.

Remarks. This large species shares with 2 others of similar size, A. paulina (Navás 1936) and A. chorrera Stark 1995, mid-ventral penial protuberances. Anacroneuria paulina differs from the other two in being darker; in the male, by the broad lateral flanges distally in the penial armature and, in the females, by the widely-spaced four lobes separated by deep notches. Anacroneuria chorrera differs from A. mantiqueirae by the brown spots on the head, a pair in front of the ocelli and a median one in front of the M-line and in the pronotum by the median light stripe. The penial armature of A. chorrera is broader at the level of the hooks and lacks the subapical ventral vesicles. The female subgenital plate of A. chorrera has four lobes close to each other.

Of the 22 specimens collected, three (males) were taken in October and the rest in November.

Etymology. Of the Mantiqueira Mountains, where the species was collected.
