TYPE LOCALITY: Mexico, Jalisco, N. slope Sierra Nevada de Colima, ca. 10000 ft. (3048 m) .

DISTRIBUTION: Jalisco (Mexico); if including S. vagrans orizabae, then east to Puebla and Veracruz (Mexico) (JAJ and RSH).

COMMENT: Contrary to Findley, 1955, Univ. Kans. Publ. Mus. Nat. Hist., 7: 613-618, this species does not include emarginatus or ventralis, which are in the subgenus Sorex (Diersing and Hoffmeister, 1977, J. Mammal., 58:331). Subgenera characterized by Diersing, 1980, J. Mammal., 61:76. S. vagrans orizabae may prove to be a junior synonym of oreopolus; see Junge and Hoffmann, 1981:43.
