TYPE LOCALITY: Mexico, Oaxaca, Cerro San Felipe, 1,000 ft. (305 m) .

DISTRIBUTION: N. W. Puebla to Oaxaca (Mexico).

COMMENT: Considered a subspecies of oreopolus by Findley, 1955, Misc. Publ. Univ. Kans. Mus. Nat. Hist., 7:613-618, but ventralis is in the subgenus Sorex and oreopolus is in the subgenus Otisorex; see Diersing and Hoffmeister, 1977, J. Mammal., 58:331. Similar to saussurei but smaller; see Junge and Hoffmann, 1981:44. See also comments under oreopolus and emarginatus .
