Discussion: Subgenus Petromarmota; basal to the caligata-vancouverensis clade (Steppan et al., 1999). Considered a subspecies of marmota by Rausch (1953), but reviewed by Hoffmann et al. (1979) who confirmed its specific status. Also see Edelman (2003, Mammalian Species No. 736).
