Distribution: SW Chihuahua (Mexico).
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (nt).
Discussion: Subgenus Callospermophilus (Hall, 1981:410) . Gromov et al. (1965:150) considered Callospermophilus a subgenus of the genus Otospermophilus . S. madrensis and S. lateralis are sister species (Harrison et al., 2003). Reviewed by Best and Thomas (1991 b, Mammalian Species No. 378).
