Discussion: Subgenus Notocitellus (A. H. Howell, 1938) or Otospermophilus (Hall, 1981:399); but see also Birney and Genoways (1973) who suggested it is closer to subgenus Ictidomys . Molecular sequence data indicate that adocetus and annulatus are sister species (Harrison et al., 2003), and basal to all other spermophiline ground squirrels, except Ammospermophilus .
