(holotype 3.5 mm long, 0.6 mm wide, 28 chaetigers, many aciculars broken; paratypes 2.7–2.8 mm long, 0.5–0.7 mm wide, 22 chaetigers; GP on posterior margin of right chaetiger 9 or 10; oocytes not seen; sigmoid aciculars in chaetigers 1–3, and from chaetiger 16 or 17 to last chaetiger).
Additional material. Northeastern Pacific Ocean, Oregon. 11 specimens (LACM 7597), Cascadia Abyssal Plain, Sta. AD 7, NAD 16 (44°38.8’ N, 125°12.1’ W), 1800 m, 13 Aug. 1962 (complete 2.3–6.5 mm long, 0.3–0.8 mm wide, 22–27 chaetigers; GP single, on right posterior margin of chaetiger 9 or 10) . Four specimens (LACM 7594), juveniles, one regenerating its anterior end, Cascadia Abyssal Plain, R / V Yaquina, Sta. AD 74, NAD 14 (no coordinates), 1400 m, 20 Feb. 1964 (complete 3.2–3.6 mm long, 0.5–0.6 mm wide, 25 chaetigers) . One specimen (LACM 7596), Cascadia Abyssal Plain, Sta. AD 89, NAD 22A (44°38.5’ N, 126°16.1’ W to 44°38.5’ N, 126°16.4’ W), 2860 m, 20 May 1964 (3.5 mm long, 0.7 mm wide, 27 chaetigers; GP single, on right posterior margin of chaetiger 11; oocytes not seen). Eastern Pacific Ocean, Mexico . Three specimens (LACM 7598), juveniles, two complete, and a posterior end of cirratulid, off Isla San Juanito, R / V Velero IV, Sta. 13768 (21°53.0’ N, 106°49.0’ W), 1537 m, mud, Campbell grab, 20 Jan. 1970 (complete 2.0– 2.3 mm long, 0.3–0.4 mm wide, 22 chaetigers; GP or oocytes not seen) . One specimen (LACM 7591), without posterior end, off Cabo Falso, B.C., R/V Velero IV, Sta. 13775 (22°34’00” N, 109°35’45” W), 2654 m, mud, Campbell grab, 22 Jan. 1970.
Diagnosis. Fauveliopsis with 22–28 chaetigers (Fig. 2A, B). Parapodia with one acicular and one capillary per bundle in the three body regions (Fig. 2C). Noto- and neuropodial aciculars of similar thickness; posterior chaetigers with sigmoid aciculars (Fig. 2D). Interramal papillae pyriform. Aciculars in both body ends curved, sigmoid [after the original description; Blake & Petersen (2000) found straight aciculars in anterior chaetigers in the holotype]. GP single on posterior part of chaetiger 11 in holotype (on chaetiger 9 or 10 in smaller paratypes).
Remarks. Fauveliopsis armata resembles F. challengeriae because they have genital papillae (GP) on the right side, and papillated body surface. They differ because of the chaetigers where GP are present, and in the presence of sigmoid aciculars in posterior chaetigers. In F. armata, GP are present in chaetigers 9 to 11, and its posterior chaetigers have sigmoid aciculars, whereas in F. challengeriae GP are present in chaetiger 11 to 12, and posterior chaetigers have falcate aciculars.
Fauchald & Hancock (1981:37) included a key to the Oregon species based upon the number of chaetigers. Ju- veniles show sigmoid aciculars in posterior chaetigers, such that this feature can help separate juveniles belonging to the Northeastern Pacific species. Non-type specimens are yellowish to golden, with series of transverse papillae along chaetigers 1–5(6).
