No. 12. Heterogamodes (Heterogamisca) pallens, sp. nov.

Figs. 6G,H, 21D

Etymology. The species name refers to the light colour of body and wings (Latin pallens = pale).

Diagnosis. In colouration very similar to H. (Heterogamisca) cerverae, but tegmina with darkened subcosta and veinal net, lateral borders of pronotum with more pronounced concavity.

Material studied. Holotype, 1♂, N. Nigeria, Lake Chad, Mallam Fatori, 4.–12. V.67, at light, J.C.Deeming (prep.: Bo 1380) (det. by R. Kumar as Arenivaga senegalensis). ?? 1♀, N. Nigeria, 15 m N Sokoto, Madorabi, 7 m W Gwadabawa, 10.I.67, Chr.Fry. (M. London).

Description of male. Size. Length of pronotum: 4.8 mm; length of tegmina 17.5 mm.

Colouration. Head with dark brown vertex and frons, the latter with a lighter brown transversal band, clypeus and labrum ochreous. Pronotum with a pale ochreous disc, laterally on both sides near the anterior border with a whitish patch, posterior margin narrowly brownish, remaining parts transparent (Fig. 21D). Tegmina almost completely transparent, costal border ochreous, along the subcosta with a narrow brown stripe, costal field whitish, further posteriorly slightly darkened by dark veins, area adjacent the subcosta very faintly darker marbled. Remaining body pale ochreous.

Head. Eyes and ocelli about equidistant, distance as wide as ocellus diameter. Frons between eyes and ocelli fairly plain.

Pronotum. Anterior border mesally with a distinct broad sinusoidal projection, lateral borders rather strongly concave, posterior border broadly rounded. Surface with a pair of distinct oblique depressions (sulci), anterio-lateral corners also with a shallow depression strengthened by a bending up of the adjacent pronotum margin (Fig. 21D).

Wings. Well developed, considerably surpassing the abdominal end, relatively narrow, broadest behind the middle, apex mesally.

Other Characters. Tibia armament: [1.8.0][6.8.1][10/11.7.4], dorsal spines of hindtibia in two groups 7/8+3, the most proximal of the 11 spines on the left hindtibia very tiny, hindtibia slightly curved.—Subgenital plate: Fig. 6G.—Right phallomere: Fig. 6H.

Female: Doubtful. Whether the female, like the type specimen by KUMAR determined as A. senegalensis, belongs to the new species is doubtful. It has a similar tibia armament [1.8.0][6.8.1][10.7.4], but its locality is from the other end of N. Nigeria , about 1000 km West of Lake Chad .
