Generic diagnosis. The generic diagnosis from Andersen and Saether (2005) can be emended as follows: Adult male. Superior volsella low or wide but distinct, inferior volsella well developed.
Larva. S I bifid in the examined specimens and the body setae are usually dark and long.
Description. The generic description from Andersen and Saether 2005 can be emended as follows:
Imago: Antenna with 8–12 flagellomeres in male, anal lobe reduced to well developed. LR1 0.7–1.0. Tergites with median transverse band of 4–10 setae. Posterior sternites with 1 – 4 setae. Superior volsella relatively well developed low or wide.
Pupa: Sternite II bare or with fine shagreen to needle-like spinules. Segment I with 1 – 2 L setae, II-VII each with 3 – 4.
Larva: Labrum with S I bifid. Abdominal setae usually dark and long. Subbasal seta of posterior parapod usually simple.
